People
Many great career opportunities - on Land and at sea - are on offer at the Port of Geelong and with the companies who use the port: They include:
Operational roles such as stevedoring, truck driving and operating heavy machinery. These occupations can be entered from school. Skills are largely learnt on the job. Tradespeople such as carpenters, plumbers and electrician are required to keep the port in good condition. People working in these roles normally complete an apprenticeship through registered training organisations such as the Gordon Institute of TAFE and grain port -related skills on the job.
Many professionals and technical roles are available at the port and with the Geelong based companies who use the port. Normally requiring tertiary qualifications, these include jobs as engineers, environmental scientists and accountants Administration. A large number of people work in administration roles such as shipping and port services, finance and business management. These roles can be entered in a variety of ways, either after gaining qualifications in business or through on the job traineeships
